Travel Tips: 6 ways to cut cost

Six travel tips on cutting down the cost of travel.

Here is a list of some of our tried and trusted travel tips to cutting down the cost of travel. We have been experimenting for some time trying to find the best travel tips to cut down on cost.  We have gotten creative, taken advice from friends and some of the tips came by trial and error.  You can incorporate these into your next travel plans. That may not be until 2021, thanks Covid!

Peak Season

We never travel during peak season for our personal trips.  This significantly cuts down on cost for both flights and hotel stays.  The bonus to this is there are less crowds and much better deals! Plan to visit your desired destination in the off or shoulder – season. We went to Thailand during monsoon season, July and August are the worst months for rain. We went in July! It only rained at night a couple of times during our entire two weeks stay. It was hot as hell but going during this time saved us A LOT of money!

Flights

Google flights provides a calendar layout where you can view prices for each day.  Cheapest flights will be highlighted.  You can also play around with different airports to see if it makes a difference in price. It usually will! Momondo is another go to site.  One of the things you can do with this website is you can add your departure airport then choose “anywhere” for arrival and destination. There are a lot of other ways to get creative with this site. You will then get a list of destinations from cheapest to most expensive. Secret flying is a great website for finding cheap flights and error fares.

Hotels

Book early and directly with the hotel site.  When booking early you can usually receive an early booking discount.

Military

If you are military personnel take advantage of that!  Think baggage fees, hotel discounts, national/amusement park entry fees for free or at a discounted rate.  Take advantage of it!  You and your family deserve it and so much more!

Parking

This travel tip saves us lots of money because we all know how expensive it can be to use airport parking. We usually drive to a larger airport because leaving from a larger hub will almost always cut down on cost.  With One Stop Parking you park your vehicle at a designated area you yourself have picked beforehand and pay a much cheaper rate than you would if you parked at the airport.

Travel tips: Apps

Hotels

We have used Hotel Tonight’s app for an exceedingly long time, and it has always been good to us.  With this app you get last minute deals at a discount rate.  We have noticed if you check earlier in the day you will see a different rate than in the evening.  Because of this we literally wait until the last minute to book our room.  Like, boarding our flight to Las Vegas last minute. Each room purchased will always sleep two. We use it for domestic travel especially long weekend gateways.

Extra Tip: Sandemans New Europe provides free tours. This is a great way to hear from a local and learn about the hot spots around the city. It is also a great way to learn about tourist traps you should stay away from! We have done a couple of their free tours and had good experiences. Be sure to tip them at the end!!

Great tips! Definitely agree with off-peak for travel. I use miles for airfare and get much lower rates when I’m willing to travel off-peak season and a less desirable day (e.g., depart Tuesday instead of Friday-Sunday). For longer stays, I use Vacation Rentals by Owner (VRBO) . I’ve been pleased with the locations, amenities, and quality of the rentals. Off-season rates are phenomenal (e.g., Paris for $70/night for a studio).

Yes, I totally agree the days of the week matter. That is why I love the visual calendar of google flights because you can see what day of the week will be cheapest. I have heard a lot about VRBO. When all of this is over we need to give them a try.
